We have a lot of books. When we moved to a new home we purchased five 48" W shelves and four 72" W ones. Assembly gets easier & faster after you build a bunch of these. The instructions are imperfect, but if you are slightly handy* you can figure it out. I used my DeWalt impact driver which made assembly a lot easier. You build these face-down and then put on the not-so-great backing to hold the structure square. Before you attach the backing, measure the diagonals and bump the assembly corners to get them equal (therefore square). The backing is poorly done, but is workable. There may be some unavoidable gaps which you may find objectionable. Taking your time with attaching it to the back, paying attention to the alignment of the individual backing pieces and to their gaps is worth your time. Align carefully then screw in the corners first. Make sure the fixed shelves are without horizontal gaps to the sides and vertical dividers; attaching the backing boards can help hold them tight.\r\nThese shelves are particle board but are reasonably robust. Small anti-tip-over 90 degree brackets are included which can connect the top to wall studs (this requires a stud-finder and your own screws). \r\nWith the huge purchase I had only a few quallty flaws. One of the fascia attaching boards was put on backwards and required a drill to correct. Some of the shelf support pins were slightly miscast but can be filed (metal file required) or forced into the holes w/ a hammer.\r\nOur last shipment of these was a debacle. Eight boxes were shipped without the pallet previously provided. There was a half dozen parts damaged to some degree. I emailed the manufacturer who was quickly responsive and provided replacements at no charge (I did provide the shipper's damage report number). One part was incorrectly provided, but they reshipped the requested one promptly.\r\n*I am a fairly talented wood worker and DIYer and I had to use my skills and tools to make these satisfactory. In the end, it was about the large quantity we needed and the final price.

Great shelf for the money but assembly was very hard and there were a few problems w the product as delivered. First of all one shelf had a scratch and one shelf had a piece breaking off. I repaired the breaking off piece w superglue (but it looks imperfect) and used a furniture staining pen to repair the scratch. Neither defect grabs attention on the assembled unit. Also many of the pieces had white stuff on them that required wiping. At first I thought it was styrofoam but I ended up thinking it was sawdust. Third the shelves are made of very hard wood. This makes it impossible to screw in the wood screws without drilling a hole first. This is not hard to do but I would have appreciated a heads up in the directions. Fourth, the backing piece for the unit was approximately 1 inch too wide. I ended up disconnecting the four disconnected backing pieces. Then I fit them in place one by one to insure no gaps. When I got the final piece I put it in place and placed a pencil line to show me what needed to be cut off. I took it to a friend with a table saw and he sawed to fit. Then I brought it back and screwed it on. After standing up the unit I restored the seams to prevent them from bowing out from each other. These many adjustments required a few hours work that I did not plan on doing. All in all I got a great price but it took 5+ hours to assemble.

Overall, I would recommend this product. It gives you a nice looking piece of furniture that is functional without having to invest too much money (or time building one yourself). As mentioned in their instructions - you really do need two people to assemble. It came in two large boxes, which weren't light, but my wife and I were able to manage.\r\n\r\nPros:\r\n- More attractive than the standard "ready to assemble" bookcase.\r\n- Holds lots of books\r\n- Adjustable shelves\r\n- Solid construction * (apart from items mentioned in Cons)\r\nCons:\r\n- The backing comes folded and taped together at the seams. This was not done too well and we needed to adjust. It was the one part of the bookcase we didn't like. Seems like it would be better to not have the seams taped. Fortunately the books hide this aspect of the bookcase.\r\n- The shelves have a piece of trim to hide the cut edge of the shelf material. For looks they are nearly twice the width of the shelf, which makes it difficult to get books in/out if you are attempting to conserve shelf height.\r\n- We had to shim the top front facing piece of trim when attaching as the cleats were not square.

As some other reviewers have mentioned, this is a sturdy, solid piece especially for the price. That said, after a few days there is still a pretty strong "manufacturing" or "paint" odor that's pretty unpleasant. We had help assembling the piece, but the two guys who did the work said the instructions were not always clear or simple and that it was rather challenging. Other reviews that said as much were the reason we hired help in the first place, so that was also no surprise. In short, it's a solid piece for the price, looks good, but has some assembly and odor issues out of the gate. Hopefully the smell will dissipate soon. We have an air filter fan running all day right next to it to hopefully speed the process.More

We needed a big decorative piece for a narrow wall and this tall bookcase is perfect. The color matched our existing mahogany furniture. We did not install the backing board but we added metal angled brackets to the back for structural bracing. Also, we did not use all the shelves because we wanted a more "open" look for candles, baskets, pottery and plants. Our only criticism is that one of the boards on the front had a flaw in the finish which looks like fingerprints on the dark stain. The unit was little difficult to assemble and it does require two strong people to position on the wall. Would buy it again...thank you Home Depot.

We are using this as a toy shelf in our kid's playroom. It was pretty easy to put together and seems sturdy enough. It's good for what we are using it for, just wish it was maybe a little taller and shelves were a little deeper to hold more stuff. But it was as advertised and looks good. Only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is I don't love the back, but since it's been put together and holding toys, I haven't even noticed it. Only other thing that I was disappointed in was the color. We have an espresso toy chest and an espresso table and chairs in the same room and they are both brown. This espresso is more blackish than brown.

We searched everywhere to find just the right bookcases. Hayneedle had exactly what we needed. We purchased two 36""x72"" bookcases for our hallway to hold books that have been in storage since we moved. The two units match perfectly and the adjustable shelves gave us the flexibility we needed. We were hesitant to buy online but previous reviews and comments gave us the confidence to purchase online. The discount and free shipping were as advertised. The two packages came FedEx from the West coast to Florida and arrived a week ahead of the estimated delivery time. The units were easy to put together. All the pieces fit exactly. Each package weighed just over 100lbs. We had the delivery agent place them in the hall so we could assemble them in place. We took our time and followed the directions. When we opened each box we were careful to remove the Styrofoam packing and wipe each individual peace with a damp cloth to remove any Styrofoam dust. We are very happy with our purchase from Hayneedle.

Bookcase looks good and seems reasonably well made, although one corner joint is not closed completely, and centerline of back is not taped tightly at the seam. Assembler from Handy did an excellent job making the piece fit in the space provided. My only serious complaint is that the unit has an unpleasant odor, something I hope comes from the dark "cherry" finish.I'm trying to air out the room in hopes that will cure it, but this is winter, and my office is getting too cold to work in. Can anyone suggest an odor eater that works in a situation like this one?

The bookcase is very solidly built, the pieces are quite precisesly manufactured, so as a result assembly --although a bit complicated--works well. The piece look really great. My only reservation is that the back--made of 1/4 finished plywood folded up accordian-style with pieces taped together--is a bit skimpy, and it is tricky to unfold the back and install it without having a visible crack in at least one place. Might be better to provide separate plywood panels and let the customer fit them tightly together as part of installation. .

This is very sturdy and looks nice in the study. It did take three hours to assemble the first one. The second one came with the facing broken off one of the shelves. It does appear it can be repaired. These are VERY heavy and it would be nice to have an option for delivery to the room where it would be placed. Appearing on the doorstep with no notice required some maneuvering to get it to the garage for safety and ultimately I had to hire a moving company to get them to my basement recreation room for assembly.

Lots of building going on in our area and finish carpenters are in high demand and seemingly run off their feet. No one wanted to take on a 141" long bookcase and anything I looked at online made me have Goldilocks syndrome. I kept coming back to this Aliette Library Bookcase because two was almost, "Just right". I knew it would need modification but I found a willing handy person and I'm so glad I did. Since we were building it between two walls I chose not to use the backing to let my white wall shine through lightening the space and we eliminated one end piece (the one that would have created a double middle) with a drill to make the new center function for shelves. It looks polished and intentional, seems sturdy and is now filled with a lifetime of books and memories.

This bookshelf was perfect style and wood that I was looking for. Required 2 to assemble but not difficult. It is sturdy and the adjustable shelves are perfect. However the backing is really cheap and have a fold held together by tape that runs down the middle of the exposed part of the shelves. It would have been great if it were just one piece per divided area - you can easily see the seam unless obscured by books - I'd love to have it be able to be open.

Overall I think this bookcase is a pretty good value. We bought two. Took about 40 minutes for one person to assemble. Primarily it is particleboard with veneer. The back is basically reinforced cardboard. I learned to watch the back's center gap to close it as much as possible when screwing on the back. Each bookcase comes in two boxes. The drilling for the shelf pins is accurate and well-fitted.

Still have not been able to have put together, received them during the height of Covid, I was caregiver for my 93 yr. old Mother and couldn't get around anyone to have assembled!!! So long they will have to be put together in the rooms they are going in......in my home!!! They are too long to turn corner, etc. to get into those rooms after assembled!!! Then have had a couple of surgeries my son had to have and again too leary about Covid (still pretty strong in our area) to have someone in my home. Have been trying to have someone assemble them since the last of 2022, but all handymen and contractors so busy with big jobs, having some trouble finding someone for this smaller job!!! Wish me luck!!! Love the book cases, ordered #2 just hope all part are there and no problems when they do get put together!!!

Functional, solid, and looks great. Arrived in perfect condition despite the box being banged around a bit. Assembly was pretty easy, but the backing panels didn't fit right initially. We cut the tape off one section and that helped the backing fit more flush. Wipe down well before use, the staining on the veneer stained the packaging in some places.

This wall storage unit is exactly what I needed for my son's room. It fit perfectly on his long wall and gives a ton of storage space. Assembly was a little confusing and the back panel is flimsy cardboard which is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 but it definitely works for exactly what we need and I think it should last a long time!

Large well built bookcase for a low cost.\r\n\r\nThe dimensions of this bookcase fit perfectly for what I needed in the living room to place under my TV. The bookcase is well designed but does take a good amount of time to put together.\r\n\r\nI only had two issues during assembly.\r\n 1) The top accent piece was not flush on the right due to the anchoring wood underneath. I was forced to use a hand sander to sand this down to get it to sit flush. This was a little frustrating to deal with but understandable.\r\n 2) The back is taped together which helps align it but some of the pieces tape was leaving a large gap between pieces so had to spend some time getting things aligned using the spacing on the vertical pieces to get it setup well.

Beautiful piece, but it was difficult to build because the pieces were not labeled and parts of the instructions were confusing. I ended up printing the version of instructions listed on the site under the details tab instead of using the paper copy that came with the shelf. It appears to have some updates.

Its HEAVY and very sturdy for my many many books. However the back slab is taped together and came crooked and unless youre filling those shelves its not going to look great. Also the brackets to mount to the wall come with zip ties to hold it together. Not the best. The quality is fantastic though.

It's a great unit, but the directions for putting it together are dreadful. Left, right, up, and down were not clearly labelled on the pieces. It took some trial and error to put it together. But once together, it's solid, and very functional. And it looks more expensive than it is.

Pretty sturdy; however, the stain job and finish leave a lot to be desired. The back is taped panels of heavy cardboard and the panels were unevenly taped, so they were not evenly spaced nor matched at the ends. Have a gap in the middle back so I put tall books there to hide it.

I plan on putting a granite top on it and was worried that it may not be strong enough or of sufficient quality. I was pleasantly surprised at the overall quality and structural integrity. It is more than strong enough to support a granite top once secured to the wall and floor. I have to finish the back of the unit since it is designed to go up against a wall but that will easy enough to do. It is exactly what I was looking for and now that my sister has seen what I did in my house, she wants me to do the same in hers. Great unit and great value for the money.

One suggestion. When installing the back panels, you should instruct the assembler to be sure to push the two center panels tightly together before screwing the piece. We were disappointed to see a gap through which the tan tape was visible when we stood the bookcase up.

I assembled the 84 inch and two 48 inch units and built them into the wall. I used small angle brackets screwed on the vertical supports to fasten them to the wall and screws to fasten them to each other each other. The back of one 48 inch bookcase was wrapped with wood matching the existing basement walls. The enclosed pictures do not show the project with all the finished trim but show the concept. I could have built them from scratch but would still be in the building phase. By using these precut bookcases my project went much faster and with much less work on my part. Essentially this was completed as shown, in a week of only working two or three hours a day.

The bookcase back is badly designed with a pressed cardboard backing that has seams in the middle of each of the three shelf areas - presumably designed this way to fit in the box. The backing could be made so that the seams are behind the vertical shelf dividers and thereby wouldn’t show. Also the center seam didn't fit tightly together so there was a visible gap in the center if the back. (though the gap can be brought tightly together by turning the piece on its side, unscrewing about 20 screws, pushing the sides of the paper backing together and re attaching the backing to the frame. In addition the piece was shoddily varnished. Areas were missed entirely, and there was also some uneven finishing and some discoloration. I purchased matching varnish/ stain at the hardware store, and touched it up to hide the defective areas. After all that, the piece looks pretty good.
