This is made of particle board ( now called a medium density fiber board ) with what appears to be areal wood veneer laminated onto it to make a 3/4" thick board. Then stiles made of 13/16" x 1 1/2" solid wood is glued onto the edge to make an 11" wide board. The sides, bottom, top and shelves are made of these boards. The top and bottom of the case have edges made of this same solid wood. The pieces are held together with wood dowels and good quality cam-locks. The fixed middle shelf is held in by wood dowels only ( in my opinion should be cam-locked in, but it isn't ). The back is made of three long strips of very thin plywood taped together with plastic tape and screwed to the back of the bookcase. This gives the bookcase very little racking strength, so one should not try to move it even a little bit when it is loaded with books. There is no cornice detail on the top or bottom of the bookcase; effectively it is a shallow box upended with shelves in it. Non-sensically, the top and bottom shelves are identical except for the bottom shelf not being stained on the bottom side. The top shelf is stained on both sides. Unfortunately, I was shipped two bookcases with one top and two bottom shelves. I suppose the manufacturer thinks it is saving a milli-cent by not staining one side of one of the shelves. They should simply make the top and bottom shelves identical by staining both sides of both. That would save the milli-cent in manufacturing, because they could then dispense with having to choose a bottom and choose a top to pack up an assembly. And in the process keep people like me from being PO - ed, not shipping the whole package back and then reducing the Overall Rating by one star.\r\nThe finish on my brick cherry bookcases was good, but a little rosier than cherry should be.\r\nI am satisfied with these utilitarian, low-cost bookcases, but I searched the internet, high and low for more of the cherry bookcases that I ordered on-line several years ago. Those are still beautiful and have essentially the same construction, but with fancy cornices top and bottom. Unfortunately, I didn't find them, so these bookcases were the best I could do. I looked at several bookcases made by name-brand manufacturers from essentially the same type of materials, but they were all too flimsy. Mostly, they all would be incapable of supporting real books. At least these bookcases can support real books. If the shelves were wider than 2 1/2 feet, they probably would not support a full shelf of books.

Good design, only fair quality. I purchased four of these bookcases. First of all, buyer beware: the height is 84" not 72" as the description indicates. Actually, I was okay with this but some people may be disappointed. The numbers in the model indicate width and height. I also purchased four Multi-Use Storage Pantry cabinets (Model # KT613B-3072-D) for which I gave four stars (but, would have been fives stars if not for the poorly written instructions). It took me a while to figure out why these bookcases seemed to be inferior because they looked virtually the same as the pantry cabinets (except for the doors). Finally, I figured out that the two side pieces are 3/4" thick and the pantry side pieces are 13/16" thick.\r\nYou may not think 1/16" makes that much difference but consider this:\r\n- It was very easy to hammer the wooden dowels all the way through the side. This never happened on the pantry sides. Fortunately, the sides that I ruined were butted up to another bookcase.\r\n- The sides were damaged in one of the packages (more on that later). That extra 1/16" may have allowed them to stay intact during shipping.\r\nThe back panel is a tri-fold. For packages purposes, this makes sense. However, I would have been willing to pay more for a bookcase that had a back panel in one piece (notice the gap in the second photo where one of the panels is warped). The panels for the pantry cabinets don't matter because those have doors. Ikea has (or, at least at one time had) one piece panels for their bookcases. Other than that, this bookcase is still a step better than what you would get from Ikea.\r\nSome of the pre-drilled holes were only partially drilled or not drilled at all. The first image shows what happens if you encounter this scenario and are not careful about how deep you make the hole that should have already been there.\r\nGetting back to the damaged sides, I first contacted Home Depot. Their solution was for me to repack the entire bookcase and send it back. That would have been a tremendous hassle since I effectively damaged the cardboard to open the package and did not notice the damaged pieces until it was almost all unpacked (those were on the bottom). So I contacted the vendor (Plycraft Industries Inc.) and they sent the two sides directly to my house (even though the original order was picked up at my local Home Depot). That was by far a better solution.

Solid wood construction is very sturdy. The instructions were not too hard to follow, and I was able to assemble it myself. Working alone it took me a couple of hours, mainly because I ordered the largest size and I needed plenty of room to maneuver the pieces. It is HEAVY. My only criticism is the backing could have been sturdier, and there should have been pre-drilled holes for the aprons where they attach to the unit. The end product looks like the picture, though, and the use of a cross-shelf adds extra durability. All in all, a very nice bookcase. It would be a good project for beginners. I included a pic without the movable shelves.

It is well constructed and the kit is fairly easy to assemble. The only problem we encountered ( takes 2 to assemble ) was: in assembly Step 6, where the top and bottom aprons are attached, the top and bottom shelves need PRE-DRILLED HOLES for the aprons tp be screwed into!!! I had been looking for shelves a few months due to my space limitations and these were perfect! There were a few dents/dings in some places, caused by transport and the fact that there are spaces in the packing box the wood is packed directly against the box where there should be a layer of styro packing between the packing container and shelf parts.

I ordered two of the Cherry finish bookshelves and found them very easy to assemble and erect. The only issue I have with the bookshelves is the thin backing that is only attached along the perimeter and on the one fixed shelf. Because it is thin and not supported for most of its height, when items are pushed onto the shelves, the backwall pushes away from the shelf and creates a gap. I wish a thicker, interlocking back composed of three sections had been included instead of the thin cardboard backing.

The bookshelf itself is sturdy. It is extremely heavy - you will need two people to assemble/move it.\r\n\r\nLowering the rating because purchasing extra shelves is nigh impossible. I requested to purchase extra shelves at the email provided in the Q&A and they want to charge $63.00 just for economy shipping for *two* shelves AND only accept money orders/cashier checks. Really shady that a business in this day and age does not accept any form of online payment.

The bookcases were well designed and look good. One problem is that there are 5 adjustable shelves but only enough supports for 4. Also there is one less metal screw that connects to the cam although we may have misplaced it but I doubt that. The instructions could have been a little clearer as well. For example, the fixed shelf needs to installed prior to completing either the top or bottom but the instructions do not say this.

This product exactly fits our needs the online discription and specifications are acurate. The quality is good and was simple to assemble assuming the user has a basic knowledge of the use of tools e.g. screwdriver, light hammer. Assembly employs numerous screws so a screw or drill gun is handy. The product arrived intact and was extremely well packaged and wrapped avoiding any damage.

we bought this same bookshelf in a larger size and love it. however, when this one came there was a piece that had come apart. we had to glue it back together after straightening a nail. we had various pieces with imperfections. when we assembled it there are noticeable gaps in some places, which we did not experience with our other bookshelf of the same material.

The bookshelves are sturdy and look attractive. They can be improved by the manufacturer in at least either of two ways for a better product: 1. add oak patterned contact paper to cover the ugly and flimsy backing, or 2. provide quarter inch sections of oak veneer for backing. Number one is cosmetic but important if the back of the shelves will be exposed. Number two would result in an excellent product for the price. \r\nMy rating is 4 and 1/2 stars, but the format here did not allow half stars.

I bought this to accompany the larger units (6'x6'). It matches perfectly (material/height/shelf placement), though the shelves are a bit longer (see the attached picture, this unit is the one in the middle). As with the other units, I decided not to use the flimsy backing (but this required adding in a lot of structural supports, bracketing it to the wall, and screwing it to each of the bookcases at the side). I also used a dark stain on cue tips to color all of the unused shelf holes.

My friend and I put this together in my classroom in just over 30 minutes. The key? Organize the materials and parts and have one person read the instructions and the other follow directions. She and I were quite proud of ourselves for completing the task in about 40 minutes and working so well together. It is a perfect bookcase for my little library in my classroom. It's sturdy, nice looking, and the shelves are adjustable.

I have bought a total of three of these for the house and am quite pleased with them. They are handy and assembly is pretty easy, as long as you follow the instructions and are reasonably dexterous with your hands. Took me about a half hour to assemble.
