Needed to replace 20-year old JVC RX-8000 receiver. First impressions from only 1 day of usage are all good so far. Had to do a firmware upgrade the first day, but that's fairly expected for most digital products these days - simple and easy to complete once the initial setup was done. No problems with wireless setup - fairly impressed with the way it allowed me to connect to it with my iPhone, and it was then able to pick up all the network settings to connect to my wireless router.\r\n\r\nSeems to work well with my Apple products in general - easy to use the AirPlay interface on phone to send music to the receiver without ever looking at the manual. Tried it again later using iTunes from my desktop machine - connected to the receiver without any setup steps and played the first time. Also tried the free Denon Remote App for iPhone. No problems connecting to receiver, and was able to easily use it to control the inputs and sound levels. Particularly nice for controlling the Zone2 setup and sound level. If everything continues to work as well as it has this first day, I'll consider this an excellent replacement for my old receiver.

This is an initial review and my first impressions. I set up my new receiver yesterday. I do not like the following: 1) NO switched A/C plug on the receiver. I run my receiver in an enclosed cabinet into which I have forced airflow cooling installed which would have powered on automatically for me with a switched outlet in the receiver. 2) I hate that the headphone jack kills speaker sound when headphones are plugged in which can not apparently be disabled in setup. My wife has some trouble hearing dialog and I had planned on using bluetooth headphones with the transmitter fed from the headphone jack while I get full sound from the speakers. I will be playing instead with center channel output to help her hear. \r\n\r\nI really like that the receiver has a built-in TV/Sound mode on the remote. I have a smart TV and I do not want to use ARC. This setting easily enables feeding sound from the TV (for its various built in apps such as Netflix, Pandora, etc) to the receiver via optical cable when a cable box is not the source but the TV is the source and the only thing fed to the receiver is the audio sourced from the TV.\r\n\r\nI am still discovering how I will use this receiver for music content from the internet. Nothing on radio appeals to me and I look forward to discovering how to take advantage of this internet enabled receiver. I am hardwired to the internet for connectivity so I can not comment on wireless connectivity. I do have a smart TV but I hope to find advantages with this interface.\r\n\r\nThe bluetooth connectivity from my iphone worked flawlessly. I have not played with the app for the iphone....it was not rated very well I noted when I downloaded it to my phone.\r\n\r\nOne reason I bought this receiver over cheaper versions is the generous number of HDMI inputs....so many only have four. One of the HDMI inputs is on the front panel as well as a USB port.\r\n\r\nThis receiver does not have a phono input.\r\n\r\nI have not used any wireless speakers and unlikely that I ever will.

Even though this is an AVR, I purchased this mainly for audio- mainly Pandora over wi-fi. When it works the sound is amazing- better than from my iTunes library. But lots of issues- first you have to perform a firmware update to get Pandora working. It hung and I had to call support. They were not 100% sure what was going on. We restarted the update and it worked. Each day it grabs a new IP address- some days this takes 5 minutes or longer. BTW-I have a strong network: new Netgear AC class router with good strength and speedtest show 150mbps download speed.\r\nios app is not a great UI, but after a few days it's ok-but I love what it does. Very cool.\r\nOverall, we must remind ourself that these are now more computer than audio gear- and as such will have some rough spots at times.

I bought this as an upgrade from a sound bar and boy does it sound good. I have the av hooked up to the Denon sys 2020 surround sound speakers, together they sound great.

I'm a regular guy who wanted a cool sounding surround sound system for watching movies in a 12 by 20 tv room, plus music in an adjacent bar room. I needed 2 zones. Remembering Denon being a real player in high quality audio going back decades (I even splurged for their blank cassette tapes when I was a kid), and researching what would be a good spot between entry level and way too much for me to justify spending on watching movies, I went with this one. I have Zone1 driving the Energy Take Classic 5.1 system for TV room, and Zone2 driving two Polk 10 inch ceiling speakers over the bar. (Ran the speaker wires in the walls during construction). All working as expected and sounds great going on 2 years now. I followed this unit's on-tv-screen step by step instructions for using the Audyssey mic to set up the 5.1 system speakers after I mounted / hung them. (One delay in set up was two rca inputs on back of subwoofer, one output on back of this unit. Quick search on avs forum told me to use left channel of sub - solved). Fios Cable box, Samsung Ultra HD BluRay, all through HDMI's on back of this unit, out to the HDMI ARC of my Sharp 70" 4k. All different brands and everything works great together. Amazon/Netflix/Vudu Streaming apps on TV play back through receiver fine as well. There was a loud crackle when I first introduced the 4k blu ray to the set up, but again search of the symptom on avs forum, returned conversations about HDMI cables, got me thinking my HDMI cables might be too old for the 4k. Something about 2.2 or 3.0 or HDCP etc... I just replaced any older HDMI's with brand new and crackling was gone - solved. Fios remote even turns everything on and off including this receiver, without me pre-programming it (It was programmed to the TV before I added this unit so I assume its ARC connection that's doing it, whatever it is I'm happy). Also I wasn't sure what sound playback mode to set it on for movies. There's many sub-modes with variations on the terms Dolby Digital DTS X Naurel (I have no idea really, avs forum will educate you til your hearts content, I'm just trying to watch the movie...) but I found in the manual the PURE button on remote brings up the sub category called AUTO, where the unit reads the incoming encoding (those variations on Dolby DTS X etc.) and chooses the playback mode that matches for you. Done and done! I think all week at work, I want to turn on a movie on the weekend and not be distracted by the thought, if after buying all this stuff and installing it, is it now giving me the best sound I can get out of it. With the Audyssey Mic set up, and AUTO decoding mode, I don't have to think about it.

I really hate this AV Receiver. First of all DSP modes are bad, really bad, Video game mode is the worst, it puts all sounds from surround speakers to front. Why? Its terrible.\r\n\r\nThis is mine 8 av receiver, and first being Denon, after 2 weeks I still cant adjust my subwoofer or lfe level to sound right. It either lacks in Stereo or is tol much in 7.1. Dynamic EQ is a joke, everything sounds muffled and heavy. HDMI CEC works when it wants to. No DSPs for Atmos or DTSX. \r\n\r\nSystem menu is very slow and unresponsive, any adjustments feel like a chore. Remote is too big and clunky.\r\n\r\nApp. My god, the app. This is the first time my smartphone froze, because if this app. It opens uo 50% of the time and it takes around 15s on S7 to open up, and sti is laggy and so slow. You cant even adjust speaker levels inside the app. Menus are overbearing.\r\n\r\nAt this price Denon is not delivering at all. Sound quality is give or take the same as other Av receivers in the price category, but usability is terrible. And I am starting to hate subwoofer which I've loved so lomg, because if this receiver

I was hesitant to purchase this based on a few mixed reviews, but after comparing the specs of many models from a range of manufacturers, I took the Denon plunge. \r\n\r\nFirst off, I'm an audiophile of sorts, and have been using medium to high-end receivers since the 1980s. Substandard audio can literally hurt my ears, so my expectations were fairly high to begin with.\r\n\r\nSetup: straight forward, the Audyssey speaker calibration tool is fun and works great! Sure it takes a few minutes of moving the mic around, but the TV interface is easy to follow and automated speaker calibration was worth the time.\r\n\r\nFeatures: read the specs, exactly what it says. Joining the home network was a breeze, 4K blue-rays played instantly, pairing with Bluetooth took a few minutes, but then streaming music from a smartphone was great! All-in-all a very user friendly device.\r\n\r\nSound and display quality: Top notch! Some say it's a little under powered, but this is solved by adjusting the source input levels for each device. No voice synch probs at all during 4K play, and although I've only tried it in 5.1, it sounds nearly as good as my 7.2 setup downstairs (this is in the loft for the kids). I'm going to add a couple of rear surrounds during the next Klipsch sale because I expect it'll sound even more massive!\r\n\r\nMusic playback: Awesome! I heard that Denon was better at movies while another leading company was better at music, but this receiver kicks in both departments, and all through bookshelves and subwoofer! Go figure!\r\n\r\nGames: my boy's WiiU sounds killer in surround sound! \r\n\r\nIn summary, for a sub $1K receiver, you could definitely do a lot worse! I'm totally satisfied and the only remaining checkbox is if it stands the test of time. Fingers are crossed!

My rating on this would be 4.5 out of 5. My first Denon Receiver was purchased just over 20 years ago. It still works wonderfully, but the connections are old technology and that is the reason I purchased this one. This new receiver is absolutely awesome. Picture and sound quality are flawless, provided you have good speakers and decent TV. You can connect your bluetooth devices to this receiver, such as phones and laptops. You can download an app for for it, but don't bother with it because it is unnecessary. Just click the bluetooth button on the remote and then set your Laptop or phone to find bluetooth connections and you can play your music. You can also change the naming of the input on the device, in a lot of cases it renames them automatically. As an example one of the the inputs is listed as AUX, renamed to Playstation without a manual change being made. Not all devices will do this, but you can manually rename them which is nice. You can also dim the display lighting on the receiver, so that they are normal bright, dim. Additionally, it can be set to have the display lighting off except when you interact with it. There is only one enhancement I would recommend for Denon to make this receiver perfect. It is not enough to down grade my rating as it is a very minor annoyance and not major. - The input assignment does not include the Component Video as its own input option. When using them, it has to take over one of the HDMI inputs via manual settings changes. This is very typical, but I would rather them have their own input selection and not take over what would be used for an HDMI port.

Discovered the Denon AVR-X2400H can only bluetooth stream music (from iPhone or iPad for example) to the Heos speakers! You can not assign Heos speakers as surround elements using the surround signals generated by the AVR in a home theater 7.1 configuration. The only way to put Heos speakers in a surround sound system is to buy a completely different Denon Heos AVR (see the naming confusion here?). Less confusing marketing slogans/naming would have avoided the frustration and ... This is a great receiver with more than enough power for a common 7.2 home theater. It has all the features found in a most 4k receivers with the new ATMOS. The sound quality has exceeded my expectations in a mid entry receiver. It sounds great! I chose this unit because of its features and being able to read the content on the front display panel, along with the price point for my application. I'm not a big fan of the cardboard calibration stand so to get the best sound out of this AVR, I attached the Audyssey calibration microphone to a tripod. It was much easier moving the tripod around during calibration. I made sure not to move the tripod more than three feet away from each calibrated position. The closer all calibrated positions are throughout the process, the better the sound afterwards. During calibration I kept the room very quiet in order not to introduce unnecessary sound into the mix. Now I am enjoying the best sound. I am also checking out all the features of this receiver, though slowly. I really like how the low frequency sound can be contained at night time when people are sleeping. To me it is a great feature because it reduces how much sound travels through walls at night. You can't go wrong with this receiver.

Overall I love this receiver: It has enough power for a 7.1 setup in a fairly large family room (15x25) and newer features such as AirPlay and eARC work really well. I sought the best receiver I could find in this price point and the Denon fit the bill really well. Coming from a 12-year-old Onkyo TX-SR705 that cost less than the Denon, it was disappointing to see some cost cutting between the two units: An unsubstantial, non-backlit remote; no user manual (no, a PDF doesn't cut it); and lacking THX certification, among some other sound modes (DTS-MA for example). Fortunately, newer features available on this 2019 model more than make up for the deficiencies; I enjoy using my phone's app to control the receiver (although the app itself could be much more user friendly), and eARC allows me to run everything through a single HDMI cable to the TV. I haven't tried HEOS but AirPlay has been simple to use from my phone. Setup was easy, walking through the on-screen prompts to pair my phone and configure the speakers using Audyssey. The power is just right for my room. We keep the volume around 64, and turn it up to 70 for movie nights, which is plenty loud without stressing the unit. Overall I'm happy with the purchase.

I love the functionality of this receiver. It was easy to do tuning of the room, and has wonderful processing options for inputs. I like DTS Nueral:X to render normal LR stuff like tv shows to near 5.1. Menus are quick. It's passthrough is a nice feature to let my chromecast always play to my TV when I don't need speakers. Troubles: I wish the remote had a dim backlight to it, that would help see it it the dark. My play pause features don't pass through to the chromecast like a Sony one did. Similarly, it doesn't automatically turn on when it detects a sound from a source like Chromecast. I have to turn it on, then it sometimes doesn't handshake well so it will not request Dolby Digital +. Another item is that the auto off feature only works for non moving images and no sound. I can't get it to shut off automatically while the chromecast is just showing the backdrop slide show. It was marketed at being Google Assistant compatible, but as of review, it is unable to communicate with my assistant. It has been a couple of months now, and I haven't gotten any updates since opening the box. I hope this is not the case going forward, because I may leave denon after this. Read More

Great Sound and Excellent Functionality. Ease of use is very cumbersome. New iOS Remote App is Horrible. App Does not connect to AVR. It stopped connecting now, not usable.

I have Definitive Technology Tower BiPolar tower speakers, tweeters front and back, 2 mid ranges front and back, and powered sub's built in...and the matching center. JBL towers in the back. Powered consecutively by 2 Pioneers including an Elite. Vs the Pioneer the Denon 3500 brought these speakers set to life, clearer, warmer, more balanced bass. Initial setup was pretty simple, and typical to get the system just up and running on basics, and since it's internet connected it updated itself. Have not moved to setting Alexis, internet radio, and number of other features. Pass through of TV picture signal seems to be improved as well. After about a month, I am very happy. A nit picking note is the remote appears to have a narrow signal, I have to pick it up and point it at the unit, whereas other remotes seem to have a broader coverage. Reportedly, Alexis control may overcome issue, just haven't set up yet.

I have researched quite a bit before I bought this. Got it on sale for $350 so I can say that its best of the lot when it comes to budget receiver. Things I like - Wifi (2.4/5 MHz), Airplay, New 2016 Denon iOS App, 7 channels, 2 out for subwoofers, HDCP 2.2 all inputs/output, HDR capable, DTSX, Dolby Atmos, Audyssey. There are so many other features which I'm not gonna include here. Things I'm Okay with - 75 Watt 2CH driven, kinda low on power I would say however if you listen at moderate levels this should suffice. The ARC option for TV Audio always defaults TV as source even though you might have listened to a different source before it was shut down. 2 Year warranty. Customer Service from Denon is alright Things I dont like - Sometimes there is no Audio from Receiver especially when watching Youtube App on Smart TV and you have videos on Auto play, Audio stops on after first video. Happened only couple times so far, I dont notice this on other sources like Kodi from PC or PS3. I'll update this review if I come across anything interesting.

I bought this to replace an older Pioneer AVR that didn't support 4K/HDR. Within an hour of getting everything unpacked and connected, I had to do a hard reset on it because the mapping of video to audio inputs got messed up and I couldn't fix it any other way. Once I did get everything setup correctly, it really impressed me with the sound. Not only is there ample power to drive my large Polk speakers, it's all very clear. There are other features (Dolby Atmos Height Virtualization, Bluetooth transmission, and better Google assistant integration) that Denon has committed to deliver with future firmware updates. I don't know their track record for these things, but I'd rather such features be available on release. Also, I'm disappointed that Denon didn't include built-in Chromecast support, instead relying on the pretty awful HEOS platform (oddly, AirPlay 2 is supported). I'm hopeful that Denon will address these shortcomings with timely firmware updates before the 2020 models are released.

The Denon AVR-S720W is an economy choice with all the perks. While the sound output is less powerful than many of the more expensive receivers, it has plenty of HDMI inputs with features that made upgrading from my 8 year old Panasonic receiver a no-brainer. Don't worry though, I have a Definitive Tech ProCinema 600 5.1 speaker system and the Denon still thumps! The Bluetooth music streaming and 4K video pass-through works beautifully. Just make sure you have 4K compatible HDMI cables connecting all of your components and TV. When you first setup the receiver I'd recommend not updating the firmware/software via WiFi - use an ethernet connection. The download took 20 minutes or so even with an ethernet connection. For a condo or an apartment, this Denon will make your neighbors hate you. For single-family homeowners, this receiver would work beautifully in any game room, man-cave, or living room, although I'd upgrade to a more expensive model for true home theater applications.

Currently in the process of putting together a home theater setup in my basement, wasn’t sure what receiver to get but I knew I wanted one with preouts so I could add an exteramp if I wanted (to take the load off the internal amp of the receive and keep it running cooler) . My brother and dad have a Denon receiver and have never had a problem with theirs so the choice was easy. While looking at it one day online i saw it was on sale for $250 off and my local store had some in stock. Jumped in The car and picked it up. The setup is very easy to follow, it takes you through and asks all the speakers you have in your room. I only have the front 3 now but plan on adding rears and front elevation. I couldn’t be happier with my purchase and am looking forward to showing it off to people when they come over.

I used to do college radio and we used Marantz CD players. They sounded great and seemed to be made of iron, lasting forever despite continuous use. When it came time to replace my home system, I went with them. My Marantz Universal Blu-ray player is still going strong, but not my Marantz receiver. One by one I lost 5 of the 8 HDMI inputs. I did a little research and found that this is a common problem, but not for Denon even though they are owned by the same company. I went with the AVR3500H and I am thrilled. More power to feed my 4 Ohm speakers and better surround separation. It also has the advantage of having phono inputs, although only for MM. No matter, there are plenty of MC preamps out there. Overall it sounds great and the video is much more clear. I highly recommend it!

This Denon receiver is great. I replaced a 10 year old Harmon Kardon with the Denon and am glad I did. I use Crown pro amps for bi-amped front speakers and my sub. One thing to note is the bi-amp mode on the receiver does not allow you to set specific cross-over points, eq or levels for the bi-amped speakers.
