This machine has been the best investment we have made. We run a non-profit rescue, and must keep track of receipts. For the first several years, we kept the physical receipts in little containers, but the printing on thermal receipts (which 90% of the receipts are) degrades with time - especially in a hot environment. We wanted to digitize, so I'd looked at several "mobile" receipt scanners before deciding to purchase this one. I am SO GLAD that I did.\n\nWe use the standard software - Brother iPrint&Scan - which could be a *little* more intuitive or perhaps come with a tutorial on how to set up the scan settings and workflows, but once you learn how to use it, it's amazing. \n\nAs you can imagine, after over ten years, we have A LOT of paper receipts. For record-keeping (IRS, tranparency, traceability of our foods, etc.) we need things sorted by year. The OLD method of scanning with a regular scanner involved sorting the receipts into piles by year, and placing on the glass, trying to get the lid on the scanner closed with the receipts in a flat position, OR taping them to - and wasting - paper. It took time and took up a LOT of workspace that we don't have in a TINY office area. Plus - all the scans went to a single folder, where I had to MANUALLY sort them by year by looking at each file to find the date of purchase. \n\nWith this Brother DSmobile DS-940DW scanner, I set up workflows for each year of receipts, by making a folder for that year and assigning that as the "scan to" destination. I can simply grab a pile of receipts, look at the receipt ONCE for the date, click the "one touch" workflow for the correct year, and scan the receipt. With that one click, the receipt is scanned into the correct folder at my selected settings, providing digitized receipts, easily! Since it scans so quickly, and automatically files them to the correct year, scanning huge piles of receipts has become a breeze!\n\nSetting up the workflows took an investment in time, but has been totally worth it in timed saved when scanning. It's light and small so easy to stow out of the way when not in use, very helpful in a cramped, small office space.

I've had the 740D for about 1 month now, I have not used all that much, but so far it's been relatively working well. I love the convenience of it especially the duplex scanning, portability and size. Seems well made. However, I have a few issues with it thus far. Document jams: on a few occasions, when feeding a page, if the scanner doesn't accept the document 100% perfectly, it stops, I then easily remove the page from the feeder. The iPrint app displays the "document jam" error and the only way to continue is to either close the app or unplug the unit from my laptop. Next issue is that seems like the unit is not very generous in accepting paper that is a somewhat heavier stock. Jams frequently. Last minor issue is with the iPrint app. I have a 2nd Brother Multi-function print/scanner connected, so if I decide to use the alternate device when scanning, the drop down menu only shows the current device and not the alternate printer. User must click add device and then takes you back to the devices connected page and choose from there. It's not a major issue but, my viewpoint is what's the point of the device drop-down menu if it only displays the 1 device, although there's 2 connected to the laptop. Mind you, the alternate printer L2710DW is connected both wireless and USB. I briefly procrastinated about returning it but decided that I could live with it. I'll conclude by saying that of all the years I've been using printer scanner technologies, Brother has been definitely the most reliable.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I received this product for free from Brother in exchange for my honest opinion/review of the product. I had the opportunity to work with the new DS-940DW mobile scanner. Overall, I was impressed with the features and capabilities. First, the scanner works independently and does not need to be hooked up to a computer to operate which is great for offsite meetings where you will need a signature but not your computer. To do this though, you need to have a micro SD card which is not included. This would have been a nice inclusion. The scanner is a single document feed and I had it scan approximately 12-15 pages per minute so it is quick but not designed to scan those 100 page documents. The size is relatively small. The best comparable I could think of is a 3 hold puncher with more of a rectangular shape. Overall the product was easy to install and use. I had read reviews of a previous generation that it was difficult to set up but my set up was a breeze with the included software. One thing I am missing is a sleeve or protective case for the scanner. I will need to find one as there is not an easy place to put it in my laptop bag I currently have. The scanner itself seemed pretty tough but with the investment and constant moving it would be nice to have a dedicated cover.

The DS-740D is a good, small document scanner. We use it bi-weekly to process whatever has accumulated — the occasional health insurance documents (explanation of benefits) and assortment of signed contracts (ex: landscaping). \n\nThe scanner comes with a USB-A cable. But the end that plugs into the scanner uses a standard, but very rare USB connection. I wish they had used a more common connector. \n\nI use a USB-C based iPad as my daily computing device. I wish this scanner was directly compatible with iPad. I'm not a fan of WiFi models, and would love the convenience of connecting it directly to my iPad. Instead I wait and connect it to a household shared Mac mini when I need to scan things. \n\nThe scanning software is what I expect from a printer/scanner company. (the bar is very low) It's not pretty. It's not intuitive. It works.

The scanner is quite good, but the software is very inconvenient. \n1) Each workflow takes a square inch of the screen. I have more than 20 so it is hard to find the one I want. The list SHOULD be customizable like Windows Explorer - small icons, big icons, list with details, sortable by date, name, or number of images in the folder.\n2) The workflows aren't displayed in any order.\n3) I accidentally set several of them to trigger when I click the icon. I'd like to turn that on and off.\n4) 19 of my workflows put pictures into subfolders of the same master folder. I put them in the wrong place and have to move the master folder. It seems that I have to delete them all and create them all from scratch again. BAD BAD BAD!\n5) I don't know how to delete workflows. Will I end up with 40, 20 obsolete ones and 20 updated ones?\n6) If I get a jam and clear it before telling the workflow to start again, the software hasn't noticed that the jam has been cleared. I have to hit OK and trigger the workflow again.\n7) When creating workflows, browsing for the right folder should start near the most recent folder I used instead of forcing me to select a drive and then drill down to where I have created a new subfolder.\n8) When creating workflows, the default document format should be whatever I last chose.\n9) When creating folders, the default workflow name should be the name of the chosen folder.

I was very pleasantly surprised with just how portable yet very efficient the DS-640 scanner is. Being executor for an out of state estate I had over 40 documents to scan for legal matters and needed an inexpensive scanner quickly to get the job done. Installation was very easy with clear and easily understood instructions. (There are also several good YouTube instructions and reviews) I found the scanner to easily scan various sizes smoothly and accurately with very, very good resolution. I scanned everything from a laminated driver license to full 11 X 17 documents flawlessly. The settings within the software are easily understood with easy to find abilities to change settings to each particular need. I only review products that are either very good or very bad. This scanner wins an excellent review. Well worth the inexpensive cost to get such a thorough scanner inexpensively. Highly recommend.

The scanner is very good. The duplex scanning saves time. The device is small and well designed. My main concern when I bought this device was reading that it couldn't be charged from the wall and had to be connected to a PC. After a bit of research and reading around I purchased a Sony CECHZA1 AC PS3 adapter which has 2 USB outlets. I can confirm that this adapter charges this scanner from the wall. It's not as convenient as just plugging a USB cable in to the wall but comes close. A bit frustrating I needed additional outlay to solve this problem but it works.\r\n\r\nI hope this info is of use to existing owners and other prospective buyers.

It's so small I can easily store it nearby and pop it into the computer when I want to scan a receipt or document too.\n\nMy only complaint is I wish it was just like 1/2 wider so it could scan construction paper too. But other than that, it is above and beyond what I expected.

We needed a scanner to transfer paper receipts and documents into digital format to preserve long-term, mostly for warranty and health records. The thermal receipts fade over time, so preserving them in digital format made a lot of sense. I must say, I am extremely impressed with this Brother DSmobile DS-640scanner and the Kofax Paper Port software. Of course, if you are doing a lot of scanning, you would want to upgrade to a scanner that scans both sides simutaniously and faster, but if you are just needing to preserve records, this is a great model to have.

We have used these portable scanners for years, here and in Italy. The model we used the most was theDS 620. Three of those are 8-10 years old and still working. But they are old enough they are no longer supported on the newer Mac OS systems. So we purchased this 940 model. For the most part it is very similar. The only problem with it is it tends to be very finicky grabbing the paper. It can often take several attempts to get the paper to grab and then be taken in a scan run. The kind of paper does not seem to matter. The 620's never cared and took the paper the first try.
