The Epson WorkForce ES-400 II Duplex Desktop Document Scanner is my new favorite desktop accessory. An accessory, that takes up very little space (6.9 inches in height, 6.6 inches in width when closed) on my desk, but completes a lot of productivity in my daily home office tasks. After carefully unboxing my new scanner, I thoroughly read the enclosed illustrated start up leaflet. I immediately noted that it stated, "DO NOT PLUG IN USB CORD UNTIL INSTRUCTED TO DO SO". (Except it was not in bold lettering... I would make a suggestion to the company to do so, or highlight that important instruction). It was very easy to set up this wired scanner, using the supplied USB-A to USB-B cable. I then downloaded the software from Epson's website, via the internet.\r\nIt can handle projects that I create for teaching preschoolers, or even scanning records and receipts into my small business files. It's a fifty-sheet auto document feeder is lightning fast, and is able to scan up to 35 ppm, from business card sized up to 240 inches, while automatically detecting and capturing both sides of each sheet in one pass. It's built "double decker" style, where as, the pages to be scanned, are loaded at the top, then pass through the scanner, and come to rest, in the paper tray below. It resembles a printer in that manner, which is a huge improvement over having to lay pages or photos down, one at a time, on a flatbed or all-in-one style scanner. I found it exciting that this can be paired with an Epson flatbed scanner for scanning my photos or thicker materials, with the optional flatbed dock \r\nThe included Epson ScanSmart Software2 is intuitive feature allows me to choose, preview, adjust, enhance, email and upload color scans, and make and corrections or adjustments desired before saving it to a searchable pdf file, or one of several cloud storage accounts. The image correction features such as auto crop, dirt detection, staple protection and paper-skew correction, give me quality scans with less bother.\r\nI'm currently working on scanning my grandmother's handwritten recipes into files and these features have really come in handy with this project since the original documents are not in pristine condition.\r\nI have already recommended the Epson WorkForce ES-400 II Duplex Desktop Document Scanner to my friends and family. This is a nice compact and a really fast scanner. I have used many scanners but this one is a piece of art loaded with technology. \r\n\r\nIt is compact, takes space and best thing I like is the flaps close inside it. And according to my HR it is cute. It took me less than 5 minutes to open the box install and get my first 10 scans. The instructions are so well written, I was able to install it by just using the illustrations (did not read the entire instructions when installing, but did go through them later). It is really easy to setup and install. In fact this was the fastest I ever installed.\r\n\r\nIt uses a USB3.0 cable and can operate on both USB3.0 and USB2.0. I tired installing the software on windows 8 pro, windows 10 and windows 7. It worked really fine and the software installation was also really simple. After the software was installed it did update the firmware which took additional 30 seconds (really fast; and this happened only once). \r\n\r\nThis is small but a beast, it scanned documents really fast and the best part was it is a duplex scanner which mean you insert the page once and both sides are scanned. I scanned all the bill (crushed, crumpled receipts from food joints, gas station etc. that are really thin) at lightning fast speed without a paper jam!! And believe me this is the first time I was able to scan without a paper jam. I also scanned my passport, driver's license and credit cards which was really easy to because of this scanner. \r\n\r\nThe software is easy to use and understand. The application is not fancy which I love, it user friendly (not fancy) and has a few drop downs which are simple to understand and work with. I used the custom mode to have it work according to my wish. It worked pretty well, and the output was awesome. \r\nSince there was no paper jam, I deliberately jammed to test the pause button, which is another amazing feature of this scanner. This button is like the extra brain, so in a paper jam we need to start scanning from scratch, but this button take that pain away from us and now we just need to rescan the paper which is stuck and can resume the scan from there. \r\n\r\nConclusion: It is a nice compact scanner which take really less space and is really easy to use. I have used plenty of scanners, both flatbed and document feed. The Epson ES-400II Duplex scanner surprised me. \r\n\r\nTo test setup and ease of use, I had my wife unbox, install software, and fire up the scanner. She does okay around technology but lets say it's not something she does often or cares to do. There were no issues with getting the scanner up and running. The scanner is solid, takes up very little desktop space, and is a speedy quiet running machine.\r\n\r\nTo test we ran a few letter sized documents through the scanner. After the software is running, the ease of a push button on the scanner to start scanning is very useful. I was really impressed at the speed of the scans. All documents came out very well with no issues. Setting to two sided, I thought it would scan, flip, and scan again. But the ES-400II scanner does both sides with a single scan. If you have two-sided documents to scan this is a huge time saver.\r\n\r\nWe then wanted to test the scanner with photos. We have well over 1,000 family photos that we wanted to scan. Setting the software to color and a resolution of 800 dpi we begain the process. We started by putting in one photo, push the button to scan, adding the next photo, rinse and repeat. We then tried feeding the photos in by hand one after the other. To our delight the photos scanned without any other intervention. This absolutely speeds of this process. We can highly recommend this for such a task. There were larger photos that would not fit but that is to be expected.\r\n\r\nI was certainly delighted with the results of most photos. We had a few that it had some trouble with and those may require touch-up in an editing program.\r\n\r\nThis is a great scanner for many home applications, but for businesses that require multiple document scans, even double-sided, I can say I would look to this Epson for a great solution.\r\n\r\nFor the record I have done beta testing for hardware in the past, and I'm not one to say something is good when it's not. For quite some time now I have been yearning for Epson to make me higher end of their WorkForce Scanner Series compatible with Mac. While I can say the wait is finally over, the results are sadly mixed. First, let's get to the positive attributes of this robust duplex scanner. It churns through pages like a champ. It scans just about anything you throw at it quickly, efficiently, and without the hassle of constant jams. It's office equipment that works so well that it's almost fun to watch. This new scanner from Epson boasts scanning speeds up to 35 pages per minute (two-sided!) and features a 50-page auto document feeder (ADF) that you can literally put any type of paper or card through. You can scan directly to online storage like DropBox or Google Drive as well. A nice touch if you keep docs in the cloud. This scanner is a TWAIN scanner, so if your office already uses TWAIN, good for you. For the rest of us, not so much. Epson also includes a suite of software in an attempt to make document organization quick and easy. You can turn any paper docs into searchable and editable files with the bundled OCR software. The software promises a lot and doesn't quite deliver. It's clunky and needs a real re-tooling. Paired with some newer software from Adobe might be the way to use this otherwise robust scanner.\r\n\r\nAll in all, though I was impressed by this scanners speed, relative ease of setup, and easy scanning of virtually any size document including business and thicker ID cards, folded thermal receipts, and more, the software just isn't up to the standard of other scanners, like the ones from Fujitsu. For basic scanning however, the performance of this Duplex scanner is hard to beat and all at a very competitive and fair price as compared to its competitors. It has a nice hefty, high quality feel to it. Nice design overall.\r\n\r\nFor those of you looking for a wireless/wifi enabled version of this scanner, Epson just released a newer WiFi enabled model, the ES-500, which I will review separately. I didn't think that having just a scanner will make a difference in my life, because I was used to scan from my all in one printer flatbed that I have used for years. This scanner not only is fast, it is compact and it is easy to install and use! Upon receiving it I opened the box and inside was the scanner, the ac cable and an usb cable. It came with an easy to understand quick guide to help with the installation process. Once I followed the installation instructions I downloaded the software and it took less than 5 minutes to install. I tried the scanner immediately and it was as easy as putting the paper in the tray and press a button to scan! I am no expert in computers, but I felt confident using it for the first time. Once it scanned the program showed a preview of my doubled sided scanned paper and gave me different options like save, email, send to google or dropbox, print, word, excel, etc. This scanner also has a wi-fi feature and scan from mobile devices. The scanned document was clear and legible and it scanned in about 3 seconds. \r\n I am a Mom and have a full time job. This scanner will make my life much easier to organize my receipts and household papers without me having to open a lid of my old scanner and flip my paper to scan the other side. I also like that I can put it anywhere because is way smaller than my all in one printer. First, know this. I will never give a 5 star review after only owning/using a product for a few weeks. No matter what brand or retailer. How can I know what the long term reliability will be? Plus, I haven't used every setting/option the device has to offer. \r\n \r\nThat being said. I am replacing all of my outdated personal office equipment. I am comparing this to my Canon MX850 multi-purpose unit I've had for at least 10 years that still functions fine but is quite dated. \r\n \r\nThis is a comparison in my personal experience between the MX850 automatic document feeder/scanner function and this Epson ES-400II document scanning function. Saving to PDF or printing. \r\n \r\nFirst. The speed at which this Epson scans a document is MUCH faster than my MX850. I've only scanned letter size documents in grayscale to save or print. \r\n \r\nI've been happy with the quality of the scans for my purposes. \r\n \r\nI just haven't used it enough to fully use all the options in the hardware and software to give a truly in depth review of everything. \r\n \r\nAs the Epson XP-8600 printer I purchased at the same time did not offer a document feeder, I chose to purchase this. I use it mainly to scan and import printed letter size documents of importance. I wish to reduce my paper clutter. For this, so far, I've found it serves my purpose. \r\n \r\nAt present I am using this with my 2014 MacBook Pro connected via a USB 3.0 hub connected to an OWC Thunderbolt 2 dock to my MBP running BigSur 11.6.2. \r\n \r\nI will be replacing my 2014 MBP with a new MBP M1 Pro 14. Whenever it gets here. It is on order with Apple.

The scanner was very secure in the box and it was a little difficult for me to get the scanner out. I like how the parts for the scanner though are very minimal and it ships with the USB Cable and power cord. The set up for the scanner was very easy. The instructions for setting up the scanner were also very clear and with a simple download, the scanner was up and running. \r\n\r\nI love the size of the scanner and how perfectly it fits on my computer desk. The document capture software included in the download is very responsive. Scanning my first document was easy and the scanner was quick and quite silently. The bottom tray can be extended to many different positions and I scanned many separate documents within seconds. Scanning multiple documents was simple as well and the scanner has a button to slow down the scan for delicate documents like receipts. Overall I am very happy with this scanner. \r\n\r\nThe set up was quick, the software was easy to download and I am very excited to try the other software that is included and to scan more documents! This scanner will definitely help to keep all those important documents organized and the quality of the scan is very good too. I also like how the scanner is eco-friendly and recyclable. I've had this for a couple of weeks and it is doing exactly what I need it to do so far. It has a small footprint, can scan very quickly (on the default setting), and produces quality scans. The sheet feed is also quite robust, unlike my last scanner that would often jam if I loaded more than 3 pages in the feeder.\r\nI am taking off 1 star for the software and documentation. The ScanSmart software is something out of 2003 in its UX/UI. As an example, saving to PDF with OCR is a feature you can get to by selecting a sub-option when you save your file. there is no way to default saving to PDF with OCR, and the 'manual' and online documentation just cryptically refers to a 'setting' within ScanSmart. The software needs a total refresh for 2020 to bring it up to modern software standards, in my opinion.\r\nOn the plus, scanning directly to Google Drive is awesome for me, and the scan to Word produces some very accurate results even on a low DPI. \r\nAs a last note, there was an unconfirmed report I read that the machine will not be supported on certain OS platforms going forward, so that is something that may need to be confirmed in your own research as you evaluate the machine. My last scanner 'died' because the (very major) company stopped making the software backwards compatible, which is a form of planned obsolescence I object to for real 'hardware' like a scanner or printer.

This device was very simple to set up. The instructions were quick and to the point. I was expecting something larger in size but was pleasantly surprised at how light and compact it was. I am currently living (and working) in a hotel while my home is under renovation so I was able to carry this in with ease. The machine output is quick and quiet, allowing me to work on a project while everyone sleeps. \r\nMy favorite feature was the duplex capability, scanning both sides of the page and then it pops up on the screen, allowing you to then choose where you want to save it ( word, excel, or as a document on your PC. The ability to scan images into your iPhone is another really handy feature that I didn't realize was so vital in trying to stay organized and keep up with paperwork, receipts, or anything else that is important. This device is ideal for an office setting or small business. Also, very ideal for personal use. This is great for scanning documents. Letters, bills, invoices, etc.\r\nPros:\r\n - It is SUPER fast\r\n - great document feeder\r\n - nice, easy-to-use interface\r\n - awesome compact size.\r\nCons:\r\n - the picture quality is kind of bland. Not too many adjustments available. Standard contrast is pretty high, colours are oversaturated. As I said, it's great for documents, (black-and-white mostly), not so great where the colour is important.\r\n - it would be great if the document thickness could be adjustable. If I have 2-3 stapled pages, and if I only need to scan the top page, I cannot feed them altogether. It results in a paper jam. I need to remove the staple, scan the top page, and re-staple them together.\r\n - USB connection only (no wifi)\r\nAs I said a great, quick little document scanner. I'd buy it again. Just don't expect too much from it. But it works as intended.

Overall, I really love this scanner. The speed, accuracy, and vibrancy of the color scans are fantastic. The companion app makes everything easy to manage and organize.\n\nIt can get jammed if you try to scan thicker items (like my child's art projects), but that's to be expected — it's designed for documents, and it does that job perfectly.\n\nThe only frustration I ran into was connecting it to Evernote. After some research, I realized an Evernote upgrade caused the issue, not the scanner itself. A little alert or note in the software would have saved some troubleshooting time.\n\nOtherwise, it's a great product — fast, reliable, and well-built. I'd absolutely buy it again, though I expect it to last me a long time!

This scanner is definitely a good one. It is high-quality and compact; it was also very easy to set up and use. It works very well for our small office!\r\n\r\nThere are only two things that I would change. First, I am not able to have anything taped to the back of a document: if something is, it will not go through because it detects a double-feed. (It is sometimes nice to retain original, handwritten notes.) Second, the scanning software had a small quirk. When deleting unnecessary pages, the program takes you back to the first scanned page after clicking the delete button, rather than keeping its place in the document and allowing you to make a new selection. This is just a bit frustrating when there are a few hundred pages.

My unit included the ES400Ii Desktop Color Document Scanner, Super Speed USB Cable, AC Adapter, Power Cable, and a User Guide. I love how fast and easy it is to scan stacks of papers and to get and stay organized. Set up and driver installation was so easy and was such a breeze. It can scan documents up to 8.5"x240" as well as business cards and receipts.\r\n\r\nThe only downside I found was that it has to be connected to my computer via USB cable because my computer gets moved between my living room, bedroom, and office. With a lot of people working from home a lot of people need to scan documents to provide proof of work etc. This little baby can do the work with no problem. \r\n\r\nCompact and portable, it's up and running in minutes. I was able to hook this up to my laptop and download the Epson software with minimal instructions. With ADF and Duplex capabilities just drop in what you need scanned and the software does the rest. This has really come in handy since I do taxes this time of year. I did not know what to expect with this scanner, I have used other scanners from different brands. But the EPSON scanner is unmatched in the speed and quality it provides when scanning a document. I love the function of scanning on both sides at the same time and especially the quality of the detail. Another interesting function is the option that gives you to scan slower and provide more details. Bought this scanner about a month ago and I've made good use of it since.\r\nIt's perfect for scanning double sided documents, and it's very fast.\r\nHaven't had any problems with it to date.\r\nWhen documents get jammed, clearing the jam and resuming the scan job from the point of the jam is easy.\r\nIt scans business card reliably too.\r\nDid I mention that it's very fast.\r\n\r\nFor loose receipts you can either tape them to a regular sized piece of paper or you can simply buy a flat bed scanner.\r\nI bought a separate Perfection V39.\r\nBoth scanners work with Document Capture Pro without a problem.

I bought my scanner a little while ago and it has been a blessing!! I first saw a machine like this in the hospital when they scan your ID and Insurance card without having to go to an actual copier. I first used this type of scanner in the library at the college I attend, Pellissippi State Community College. I would take papers from my home to the school, that needed to be scanned so I could send them to certain agencies, and realized there are A LOT more papers that I can scan and digitalize for my home. So, I made the decision to buy this scanner and I DO NOT REGRET this purchase at all!!

Had this scanner for over a year now, and have had no problems or issues with it at all. The hardware design is great: when it's closed up it's protected from dust or foreign object from falling inside.\r\n\r\nThe software is.. ok. It does the job, but would be nice if you could have a drop down history of 'save to' locations longer than 4 items. We regularly save to 6 locations on the server and find it tedious to have to re-type or re-browse to each location.\r\n\r\nNo complaints per se, just a little friendly feedback.

For years, I had a competitor scanner. But time for a new one; so two choices. Go with the Brand I had for years, or try to Epson 400. First, it was the price that attractet me and now that I have used the ES-400 for a month, if I had known how smooth and effortless it was to use, the quality of the scanner would have sold me alone. The scanner app - Epson ScanSmart is great to use and the scanner easily connects to a Neat program I use. Thanks, Epson. My home office now has an epson printer and scanner - the best.

I have had mine about a month, and I've scanned in boxes of paper. It handles papers of any size, from small receipts to large legal documents. The single scan duplex scanning makes it very fast. And the real power is the Epson Smart Scan software, which makes it easy to edit the scanned document before saving to a dozen different formats and locations. Complete package if you have a lot of documents you want to digitize. And the compact size means it fits on your desktop.

It is a fantastic scanner solution that might feel like a lightweight but delivers solid powerhouse results. It's quick accurate and easy and fun to install, setup and operate. I am glad I spent the money to get an independent scanning device that can feed documents. Scanned 2000 pages since I bought it and not one misfeed or error. 300dpi and so quick. Even 600 dpi is speedy. Way better than depending on a multi-use 3 in 1 solution that I debated.

Needed to scan several hundred pages of documents and did not want to use my slow Canon inkjet printer/scanner. The Epson-400 II was very easy to set up and use with my 2015 iMac (OS Monterey.) Works well with Apple's Preview app as well as the included Epson ScanSmart app. Very fast. The scanner has a relatively small footprint when folded so I am keeping it on my desk.

The scanner was delivered one day late. But that seems to be the norm these days. I am extremely pleased with the quality of the scans that I have done with the Epson ES-400. Very good quality! Since the connector cord that plugs into the USB port on the computer is so short, it would be helpful to offer either a longer cord or an extender cord of about 4 or 5 feet.

I have had this scanner for 3 years now and until today have never had an issue with it. It is much faster than ones I have used previously. I love that the duplex just as fast as single sided. I had to uninstall and reinstall today and the front feed button no longer works since doing that but still I have no complaints. I believe the problem is storm related.

I'm digitizing tons of photos for my family to preserve our past, present and future. This little machine does a fantastic job, automatically adding photos to my digital library. Does a beautiful job quality wise and very fast with automatic cropping. Not only photos but newspaper clippings can be added, all in brilliant color or b&w. Love it.

The tanks are awesome. Lots of ink is included. The name brand ink is cheap too compared to non stop cartridges. The start up takes a few, as does the duplex. It'll stop and think about it mid print session. The only downside for me is the document feeder. It loves to skip pages when scanning. I need a good scanner and this printer doesn't have it. Other than that, it's all good.

I've had this for about a year, with intermittent use. I have had absolutely no problems. It is fast, compact and reliable. The OCR works far better than expected. I originally got it for a project that fell through. I was thinking of returning it but it performed so well that I kept it for personal use.

I work in a GP's office and my boss has recently purchased me the WorkForce ES-400 Duplex Document Scanner. I do a lot of scanning of different documents here and this scanner is excellent for all types. It has increased my productivity significantly and I can't imagine working without this.

I have used this scanner for 4 months and I have been very happy with my choice. I scan many documents of all different sizes at a time and have had no issues. It scans very quickly. Having the ability to scan both sides is a plus. I would recommend this scanner.
