Good shredder, quiet, shreds 12 sheets

This is the Fellowes PowerShred 12C Cross-Cut Shredder. Finding this particular shredder on Walmart.com isn't easy. There were at least 4 entries, ranging in price from about $100 to $150. They are all called “model 12C”, but the manufacture part numbers are different. My shredder was shipped directly from Fellowes and it had an internal part number of 7120005.\r\n\r\nThe product description says it shreds 12 sheets at a time, shreds credit cards and unopened envelopes. Continuous run time is 20 minutes. It has a temperature sensor, so it shuts down for 30 minutes if it overheats. It has a 5 gallon pull-out bin that catches the shreds, which the description says is good for about 250 shredded sheets of paper. The bin has a window on the front so you can see how full it is without opening it. Another nice feature is that the slot into which paper is placed is 9 inches, which is great compared to cheaper shredders which have an 8-1/2 inch slot for 8-1/2 inch paper. \r\n\r\nThe shredder has several safety features. Besides the main slider on-off switch on the front, there is a master power switch in the back. There is also a lock switch which physically locks the motion of the main on-off switch. In addition, the motor will not turn on if the tray bin is pulled out. The shredder motor can run forward (for shredding) and in reverse. When the switch is put in the forward position the shredder won't run until a piece of paper is put into the slot, and it stops automatically a few seconds after the paper has passed through the shredder. So, the main switch can remain in the on position with the shredder not running. When switch is slid into the reverse position the shredder starts running immediately and will continued running until the switch is manually turned off.\r\n\r\nThis shredder did cut 12 sheets of printer paper at one time. With the 12 sheets the cutting speed slowed down and the noise level dropped. Next I tried an unopened envelop of junk mail of about 1/8-inch thickness. The shredder jammed and stopped. I put it in reverse but couldn't completely back out the envelope. It took several forward and reverse runs, and manually pulling up on the envelope to get it freed. I inspected the contents of the envelope and it had address labels. So, shredding an envelope will depend on what's in it. I didn't try cutting my credit cards just to test this!\r\n\r\nA few comments about out-of-the-box assembly and quality. This comes in three pieces and 4 casters (wheels). The shredder head (with the blades) sits on top of the body shell and the pull-out tray slides into the front of the body shell. The head needs to be snapped into place on the body shell to lock, otherwise the shredder won't run. Once locked into place, the head will not come off of the body shell – at least not without tools and brute force. This may be a safety feature, but it makes it difficult to flip the head over and see if something is jammed in the blades (see below). The pull-out bin is made of flimsy plastic and doesn't always easily fit or snap in all the way into the body shell. Of course, if the bin isn't in place properly the shredder won't run. Another observation on the design is that the switches and indicator lights are on the front part of the shredder head and below the slot. So, when you place a sheet of paper in the slot before turning on the shredder, the paper flops over covering the controls. This review is after one week of use. Ultimately the quality of a shredder will be determined if it lasts at least one year without problems.

Read many reviews for many shredders b4 purchasing. many gave this fellows product good reviews. There were some negative but overall felt good about the purchase. It was on sale elsewhere online but I literally lost it from my cart while shopping. I also tried to avoid walmart because in my area I've received damaged boxes in deliveries and this purchase does not need to be handled irresponsibly. So I felt i was taking a risk just purchasing thru this company. No surprise upon arrival the box was damaged, and the product inside even had scrapes which i photographed.. just in case. However, I followed the instructions to the T, using it 3 full days last week.. like any 8-hour day. giving it breaks as required, and only pushing thru allowable content, and correct amounts.. I did not try the credit card feature and removed staples b4 shredding. The 5 gal bin fills up fast so watch it. It did shut off once because it got too full and I did not realize. Again, follow instructions. It worked just as I needed. It was great. I'm going to wipe it down today and see if it needs any oil, which I purchased at the same time as the product. I think if I take proper care and use it correctly it should get the full job done. Would have given this a 5 but only time will tell if it can earn that. It does work very well.

The parameters of the Fellowes00AE 12 Sheet Cross-Cut Shredder 12C are: Quiet Powerful Efficient Shredding, No Over Heating, Easy Operation, and it Shreds up to 12 sheets of paper at a time. It does an excellent job of shredding old plastic credit cards and CDs and DVDs. The shredded pieces are small enough to provide exceptionally good security. \r\n\r\nThe Operating Instructions are clear, concise, and easy to follow. You must install the Shredder wheels for easy movement of the devise. The holes to accommodate the swiveling wheels are readily apparent but quite a bit of force is required to install the wheels. I could not find any instructions in any of the documentation as to easy installation of the wheels. The amount of pressure required was greater power than I could apply with my hands. I used a light tap from a rubber hammer to insert each of the wheels. It worked fine and no damage to the wheels or shredder. A few instructions from the manufacturer would have been nice. \r\n\r\nThe shredder has a “Lock” switch which provides a degree of protection if you have toddlers in the house. Pulling the plug would have sufficed. The lock switch could be easy to overcome by most seven or eight-year-old children. Pull the plug is a better solution to the child safety situation. \r\n\r\nOverall, I give this Shredder excellent grade marks and my positive recommendation.

We had become complacent in our ho-hum shredder that we had been using for some years. We then found a box of papers that needed to be shredded and straight to our mediocre piece of destructive technology we went. Jam......20 min spent clearing the jam....three sheets in later, jam. Oh, I'm sorry, did you want to put a staple through? Feel my fury of non-performance.\n\nI ran straight down to the office store and picked up this unit and we cleared the rest of the paper in about five minutes. Staples, paper clips, unopened envelopes - this thing wasn't scared of any it, never jammed. The removal bin easily slides out for getting rid of paper and the cross feature is a necessary protector in this age of id theft. And it takes 12 sheets as well as your junkmail without opening. That's perfect...\n\nIt has a great safety feature that will stop shredding if it senses you have touched your hand anywhere near the entry point. Our old shredder had a feature that would stop shredding if you put paper in it. Edge: Fellowes\n\nSome commented that it runs for a bit after the last shred. Yes, it does which is good because it's clearing the paper out. It's only about 3 seconds. It is noisy, I'll give you that. But if you're not shredding every 15 min, it's not a big deal. I mean, c'mon, it's a shredder, it's going to make noise.\n\nOver all, a great medium use shredder!

This works as described in the add. Shredded a week's worth of mail indiscriminately in about 5 minutes. Works well on unopened bills, thick cardstock political postcards, & other junk. Definitely follow the warnings and do not use this item to trim your hair, beard, fingernails, or neckties. Does not have as satisfying a shredding sound as the shredder at work but still feels good to chop paper up with little effort. It does have reverse if something was to get stuck. Cuts off if you try to open the drawer during operation. Will not work if assembly is not perfect or drawerwer is open. Not every shred made it into the bucket but really only a few escaped. The whole this is not heavy so it was easy to pick up & dump out. The drawer with the shreds comes all the way out making for easy clean up. The shreds are about 1 inch long. There is a window so you can see how full it is.

I could tell tales of my prior experience with shredders not bearing the Fellowes name that are a disappointment and a waste of money, but those didactic tales are not relevant here. My home office has collected a box full of documents waiting for shredding because I have been reluctant to use the old cantankerous shredder. So there the box waited. I had shopped around many times for a shredder and found the Fellowes to exceed my need but always declined because of its higher price. The combined cost of all the expired shredders of other manufacturer’s I have had were more than my new PS-12Cs. This time I relented and purchased what I hope to be a long lasting machine. When I unboxed it I found a sleek design, no sharp edges, heavy substantial build and no need or chance to put fingers near the blades. How refreshing! I sat down to tackle the box of documents and admired how it chewed through six, eight, five, ten, sometimes more sheets without a whimper. Halfway through the box I smiled at how easily this task has become when it suddenly stopped working. Oh No! Jammed? Overheated? Broken? User fault? NO! It is the fault of Hurricane Irene downing power lines here in the northeast.\nIn summary, of the time I have had owning this capable and attractive machine the only force that has been able to render this unit inoperative is a hurricane.

I have only a few days experience with the Fellowes Powershred 12C shredder, but I have done a great deal of shredding in that time frame and the machine performs well. I downgraded my review by 1 star based on: (1) the sidewalls of the shredder body are a bit flimsy, (2) the speed is a little slower than my prior shredder, and (3) it is somewhat louder than my prior shredder. The owner's manual that accompanied the machine was very sparce and I had to access the manufacturer's web site to obtain a full manual. The full manual specifies that the machine should be oiled several times a month, but it did not come with any oil and I had to purchase the oil subsequent to receiving the product. Because the requirement for frequent oiling was not really highlighted well, it is likely that most users will overlook this very important requirement.

This was a purchase to replace a cheaper paper shredder. The old one was loud and slow, and often overheated causing long wait times for cool down. I guess this is a product that ‘you get what you pay for'. This Fellowes shredder is vastly superior to what I had (which stopped working in less than a year). It is quieter and faster, both great features. The instructions warn that it too can overheat. I have been shredding several garbage bags worth of old taxes and business records and it has not overheated once. I think because its quick pace has allowed me to do a sufficient amount in one sitting. I try not to put more than 4 pages in at a time, so it can continue shredding with no slow downs for thicker paper bunches. The bucket is a decent size, but if you are like me and have a lot of paper to shred, it fills up fast. I found it helpful to open the bucket before it is too full and press the air out the shreds to make more room. I like that it is on wheels so it can be out of the way until I need it and it moves easily. I think I have mostly completed the shredding I need to do, but it was worth buying this shredder. I hope it serves my purposes for a long time. If you don't hear from me again, you'll know it is still working as expected.

With both myself and my husband working from home during a pandemic this little shredder has really come in handy. We all just toss things in the garbage without ever thinking of what could happen to them or who could end up seeing it, this includes paperwork with all sorts of personal and private information. I wasn't comfortable tossing company information in the trash without shredding it first, and I also am not comfortable throwing out our own personal information. Identity theft can happen anywhere! \r\nThe shredder came well packaged and was easy to put together. Don't overload it and it should last you a long time. All shredders need oil occasionally, definitely don't neglect that little bit of upkeep. It has successfully shredded the occasional stapler left in paper but I'm not sure I would trust it with paperclips, though it says it could handle them. Be aware that shredding envelopes with that sticky seal on them can gum up the teeth over time. It came with wheels but we do not use them. Fits perfect under a desk. I am very happy with this little shredder.

I purchased my P12C in March 2012 and enjoyed consistent performance until June 2013 when the unit unexplainably began making a screeching noise and eventually stopped shredding. And yes, I regularly lubricated it with Fellowes oil or canola oil. The Fellowes organization quickly addressed my online inquiry and provided a replacement unit, even though the warranty expired. Thank you, Fellowes. My advice if anyone cares is that if you have a ton of old paperwork to shred, you may want to invest in a one-time expense for professional large-scale shredding. Then use the P12C to maintain your normal daily shredding needs.

I just purchased the 12CS Cross Cut Shredder. I brought it home and plugged it in after unpacking it.\nWhen I plugged it it, the instructions DO not say that you must unlock the safety lock. I tried for 10-15 minutes, checking my electrical connections and then tried to unlock the safety lock, It would not budge. I saw that it had an indentation, so I had to get my desk screwdriver to push it to unlock and expected the green light to glow. I could not get the "Touch Test area" to do anything....until I touched the entire area of the top. I also find that the off/on/R switch is not very well made.

After years of accumulating reams of paper with personal information, I started ripping up these before putting them in the recycle bin. After 10 minutes of this, I did some research on a shredder to accomplish this task instead, saving my fingers from hours of wear and tear not to mention paper cuts. I came across this Fellowes Shredder in a Google search and decided that the reviews were majorly positive so I opted to purchase it. It has been a "hand" saver for sure. What would have taken hours and hours and endless paper cuts, this shredder accomplishes in a fraction of the time. It shreds the paper to small strips that would be darn near impossible to put back together and is way more efficient than utilizing my hands. The bin to hold the shredded paper pulls out very easily for ease of emptying. Set up of the shredder took less than 5 minutes. There are some very nice safety features as well. This would be a wonderful addition to anyone's home office. I highly recommend this shredder.

After having my trash cans ransacked followed by me being a victim of identity theft, I decided investing in a good shredder was a must. I had another shredder by a different company, but it kept getting jammed and was so frustrating to use I gave up. I got the PS-12C because it could not only handle the stacks I accumulate each week of credit card statments and those checks the credit card companies send without asking, it can even eat my old plastic credit cards. I used to cut them up by hand, and I always wondered if some illustrous scammer could still piece together the bits and use the cards. Now, I am sure they can not, as the cross cut renders the cards into diced plastic. Also, with the safety feature that disables the shredder if a hand touches too closely to the blades, I don't worry about my preschooler son playing with the machine and getting hurt. And I finally feel safe putting out the trash.

This shredder is a monster, my older Fellowes shredder (16 yrs old) worked great, and still does, three sheets at a time. I have several older relatives who fear identity theft so they save everything that has a name on it for me to destroy for them. Typically I would burn the papers. I would have to tear check registers into two or three parts to shred them. Was time consuming and sometimes tiring. This shredder shreds check registers like a tornado. It shreds thick cardboard like it is nothing and yes it will shred twelve sheets at a time. It also shreds the paper into about one inch long pieces that do not pile up so quick, it appears that it will hold three or four times more shredded items than the old one. Time will tell. Just to test the shredder I completely shredded the thick cardboard box it was shipped in, no problem. The waste container pulls out for easy emptying.

The shredder is very easy to set up. It's lightweight, but still feels sturdy. The drawer slides in and out smoothly and the buttons are all easy to press and slide. I shredded 7 pages at once, as well as individual pages. Once the paper is shredded the blades shut off. In addition there's a power button to avoid accidents. As a further precaution, when the power button is off there is a slide lock button that prevents it from inadvertently turning on and/or prevents young kids from playing with it. The wheels are a nice feature and they do lock to avoid having it roll away. Mine is currently on carpet so it isn't an issue, but it's nice to have the feature if I change locations. I've had it a few weeks now and it works great. It's not as noisy as others I've had in the past, but it isn't a very quiet version. That said, the bulk of the noise is the paper itself being cut.

In general, it's a nice product, which can be expected to last longer if well-maintained. However, the metallic switch which slides back & forth -- for forward, stop, reverse -- is an issue. When going through bins of stuff, I came across years of accumulated tax papers and receipts, going back to 1992. While filtering through the paperwork I found many had social security and other personal information. In today's security climate, I knew I had to get a shredder. This little shredder was a trooper, never jammed, never had to reset, and kept up with my pace through all those years of documents. I am so glad I chose Fellowes. My last shredder had "said" you could shred up to 12 sheets, but would jamb up and need to be reversed. The Fellowes shredder has a larger are for feeding more documents at a time, and keeps up with continuous feeding. Cuts CD's with ease, and even chewed up some "floppy discs" of old tax data with ease. Purchase this model again (if needed)? Absolutely!

The Fellowes Powershred cross-cut shredder shreds fast and clean. You can move it around thanks to the wheels; plus I love the fact that you can pull the container to throw the shredded paper. The only thing I am worried about is the burning smell. But so far, everything is amazing.

It was hard starting (on/off key very tight) Since initial start up, I just leave on (no children in house) and it has been doing the job. A little more noisy then the previous shredder, but appears to work well. It has been easy to empty and is very compact and fits in well, where we have it positioned.

Had the same model previously. It worked fine for a year then got stuck in dead slow. I expect the same from the new one, but perhaps longer life with very careful use and keeping number of sheets shredded to about half of nominal maximum. Also, always need to vacuum some shreds after emptying.

Pretty happy with the operation so far, had no issues with the paper jamming, which was quite frequent with my last one. Also what I like about this one is the peace of mind you have with the SafeSense technology. I usually have kids around the area, and I used to be worried. Also the other day I shredded a big stack, and was able to run it continuously for a while without a break or the shredder getting hot. Happy with the style as well, this thing looks pretty stylish with the shining black color. The best part is I don't need to lift the head and place it on the floor when emptying the basket. That used to be a pain with my last one. Don't have to worry about it anymore. As for Quiet operation, it's not all that quiet as they claim it to be.

The powerhead %26 rotating teeth seem to be very well built. Quite powerful; I only had to hit 'reverse' on three occasions with junk mail envelopes. It saves me a whole lot of time in maintaining more security, keeping down the clutter in my place. It is also much easier for me and my hands since I don't have to shred and tear by hand. Surprisingly quiet. Could be a bit easier to dump or empty. A built-in chute or guide would make it easier to cleanly dump the shredded paper into garbage containers. But overall, I keep asking myself: "Why didn't you buy one a long time ago, Fred?!" So glad I bought this brand %26 model!

This shredder works really well at shredding numerous sheets of paper. I love that I can put my junk mail unopened in the shredder without worrying about jamming it. The on and off power button is on the back of the machine which keeps it out of view of small children. It also has a lock feature on the front that will keep the shredder from coming on. I noticed that it doesn't seem to sound as noisy as most other shredders I've used. It shreds pretty quick without hesitation. It even has an overheat indicator to let you know when the machine is too hot. This is a very nice shredder and I would highly recommend for home or office.

After years of buying bargain shredders that die six months later I decided to invest in a heavy duty shredder. The fact it was on sale for $61 instead of the regular price of $89 helped. It claims to be able to shread for 20 minutes straight and happy to report it can. I shredded the equivalent of a 13 pound trash bag of paper with no problems. It has a removable bin and wheels both of which are very convenient. My only complaint is it's a pain to take it apart. So just leave it intact. Just remember to oil it after every use and it will last forever.
