2021 Zind-Humbrecht Rangen de Thann "Clos St-Urbain" Pinot Gris Grand Cru Alsace

100 points James Suckling: "This vision of pinot gris perfection creeps up to you on tip toe. Wonderful quince fruit and smokiness on the rather closed nose, followed by the impeccably balanced and delightful front palate. 100 points James Suckling: "This vision of pinot gris perfection creeps up to you on tip toe. Wonderful quince fruit and smokiness on the rather closed nose, followed by the impeccably balanced and delightful front palate. Then the hammer falls and the overwhelming crushed rock minerality hits you like a landslide that sweeps everything away. And somehow all this feels as weightless as a cloud! From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold." (03/2023) 95 points Vinous: "The golden color of the 2021 Pinot Gris Rangen de Thann Clos Saint Urbain Grand Cru signals richness. However, the wine is subtle on the nose and still clouded by promising reduction. The palate presents juicy pear, lemon-edged, with a lovely licorice bitterness. The acidity is smooth and balanced, but licorice keeps flashing up darkly, broodingly, speaking of the dark volcanic stone. The finish is very long and intriguing because this is such a taut, almost austere Pinot Gris, compelling and dramatic. Wait for this. (Bone-dry) (AK)" (04/2023) K&L Notes: 98 pts, Ian d'Agata for Terroir Sense: "Luminous, rich golden yellow. Complex, volcanic-induced heat blossoms the rich ripe aromas of minerals, white and yellow flowers, caramelized maple syrup and sweet spices. Dense, spicy and dry, showcasing a strong smoky minerality and intensely saline element that just scream "Rangen" at you. Long, focused, powerful and saline almost to a fault on the smoky finish, this is just a fantastic wine, In fact, its the best dry wine I tasted this year in Alsace, so what else is there to say, except…Chapeau!"
