SUN SOIL & CLIMATE REQUIREMENTS: Grow sycamore trees in full sun for best results, though they do tolerate some shade. Sycamore trees grow best in deep, moist, rich soils. WHEN TO PLANT: The best time to plant one is late winter or early spring. HOW TO PLANT: Pre-soak for 24 hours. Fill a planting container with seed-starting medium and moisten it. Sow seed and cover with ¼ inch of seed-starting medium. Keep the medium moist. Seed will germinate in 15 days. Plant outdoors after danger of frost has passed. Expected Blooming Period: Sycamore flowers bloom in about 6 years, and the flowering period is May in early summer. PLANTING SUGGESTIONS: The sycamore isn't a heavy feeder. Fertilize it with a complete fertilizer in early spring for an extra boost. Failure to follow instructions can result in over-fertilizing and possibly burning your plant. Providing multi-season interest, Corylus americana (American Hazelnut) is a dense, thicket-forming, deciduous shrubbearing alternate, ovate, dark green leaves, 3-6 in. long, with doubly serrate margins. The foliage turnsattractive shades of orange, rose, burgundy, and yellow in the fall. In late winter and early spring, pendant, pale yellow-brown male catkins, 2-3 in. long, dangle like Christmas decorations along the bare branches. They are a welcome sight in the winter garden. The catkins release clouds of pollen that attract bees.
