This oak's name comes from the many short, pin-like branchlets on the main branches that, unlike other oaks, arch out and can sometimes droop. Has glossy, dark green leaves with 5-7 lobes that are separated by very deep sinuses, in autumn they turn a scarlet and bronze shade and some can persist through the winter. Produces insignificant brown flowers that fruit into small acorns and attract all types of wildlife.
