Description
This evergreen, herbaceous perennial blooms a yellow flower with red and orange markings. The blooms continue rapidly throughout the year, and arise from green, thick stalks. Best performs as an enhancement to the landscape by border planting, groundcover under trees, and foundation planting. This low maintenance plant needs a regular water schedule to ensure the growth of a mature root system. After the mature root system is established, watering is needed occasionally, except during a drought, watering is needed regularly. Remove old flower stalks to maintain its appearance. Add clumps of the yellow African iris to the perennial garden or use as a ground cover in sunny locations to enjoy the green foliage and attractive blossoms. The yellow flowers with dark spots in the center open at the end of long stalks March through November. Do not trim the old flower stalks. The plants continue producing blooms throughout the growing season. Lighter green thinner than typical of the species, sword-like foliage stands mostly erect then tapers outwards and down towards the top of the plant forming an almost fountain-like appearance, clusters of foliage form large clumps and makes a dramatic vertical statement in the garden or landscape. African Iris is tolerant of a wide range of soil components and growing conditions. Although moderately drought tolerant once established in the landscape be sure to water regularly after planting to help get the plant established and growing on its own in the landscape.
