Tacoma was first incorporated in 1875. By the turn of the century, had experienced a massive boom in population, growing from just over one thousand residents to nearly forty-thousand by 1890. George Francis Train staged a circumnavigation starting and ending in the city in 1890, and a plaque commemorates the finish line in downtown Tacoma. The discovery of gold in the Klondike in 1898 would allow Seattle to surpass Tacoma as the largest city in Washington, though it remains the third-largest in the state. Located on the banks of Puget Sound, the cities early economy relied on commercial fishing and warehousing goods en route to markets in South Asia or the United States. Because it had one of the earliest deepwater harbors in the nation, it established itself as a primary lane in the nineteenth century.
