Description

Full Sun (6+ Hours Direct Sunlight)Mature Height 10 - 16 FeetMature Spread 2 - 3 FeetGrowing Zones 5 - 9Red Pillar™ Rose of Sharon is the perfect, blooming shrub for even the smallest of gardens. The tall, narrow growth habit is naturally compact and requires little maintenance during the growing season. The large HIbiscus flowers are bicolored in deep pink and red, blooming nonstop through the summer. Rose of Sharon is scientifically known as Hibiscus syriacus and is the hardy cousin of true tropical shrubs, growing in USDA zones 5 to 9. Red Pillar™ can be easily grown in the ground as an informal flowering hedge or specimen shrub, or grown in containers to decorate a patio, deck, or poolside. This easygoing deciduous shrub requires little maintenance and is easy enough for even the most inexperienced gardener. It tolerates deer browsing, periods of drought, heat, humidity, and salt spray. Red Pillar™ Rose of Sharon CareRose of Sharon can handle just about any soil texture and pH level. This shrub is even tolerant of highly alkaline soils. Full to partial sun is necessary for good flowering and deep green foliage. The soil needs to be both well draining and evenly moist for vigorous growth. Fertilizing is best done once a year in the beginning of the growing season with a slow-release, complete, balanced feed. Water the shrubs well for the first year. After establishing, supplemental watering is only needed during dry or hot periods.Rose of Sharon blooms on the current year's growth and can be pruned early in the spring before buds form. Prune out any dead or damaged branches from the winter to shape the shrubs. Remove any sucker growth from the base of the shrub. Deadheading Red Pillar™ is not necessary because the flowers are sterile. Rejuvenation pruning can be done on Rose of Sharon to control the height or encourage more dense growth lower on the plant. Cut the overall size of the shrub back by half early in the spring after all danger of a late frost has passed.Red Pillar™ Rose of Sharon SpacingThe mature height of Red Pillar™ is a towering 10-16 feet with a narrow spread of 3 feet. Space each shrub 3 feet apart when using multiple plants for hedging. Container-grown Rose of Sharon will require a wide, deep pot at least 14 inches in diameter.Red Pillar™ Rose of Sharon InformationUSDA Hardiness Zones: 5 - 9Plant Type: BushesLight Exposure: Full Sun (At Least 6 Hours Of Direct Sunlight)Mature Height: 10 - 16 FeetMature Spread: 2 - 3 FeetSpacing: 3 FeetHabit: UprightFlower Color(s): RedFlower Description: Bloom Period: SummerFoliage Type: DeciduousFoliage Color(s): GreenFoliage Description: Seasonal Interest: Summer FloweringWatering: AverageResists: DeerTolerates: Heat, DroughtAttracts: BeesContainer Role: ThrillerUses: Containers, Hedges & Privacy, Specimen or Focal PointFeatures: Attracts Pollinators, Cut Flowers, Low MaintenanceBrand: Proven WinnersCommon Name: Red Pillar™ Rose of Sharon | Bushes > Hibiscus > Rose of Sharon Proven Winners HIBRE1PW
