Beautiful, finely cut, broad, bright green fronds spread out from atop a slender trunk, creating a lush and exotic accent with a palm tree-like affect. The fastest growing of the tree ferns and a stunning specimen for adding a tropical element to large containers on patios or indoors, or in temperate landscapes. A frost-tender evergreen. Tree ferns are excellent for shaded nooks and under the canopies of larger shade trees. They add a decidedly lush exotic character to any space, be it under eaves or in atriums. Give them plenty of room overhead and combine with large-leafed foliage plants and very fiery colored exotic flowers. Thrives in warm, humid environments with humus-rich, evenly moist, well-drained soil and dappled shade. Protect from harsh afternoon sun exposures in very hot regions. Apply a thick layer of mulch to keep the root zone cool and conserve moisture. Feed lightly, periodically throughout the year. Australian tree fern Sphaeropteris cooperi has a single trunk that can reach between 15 and 30 feet tall. The trunk has a brown, hairy appearance and grows up to a foot in diameter. As old fronds fall off, distinctive coin-shaped spots will form on the trunk. This plant is just begging to be an eye-catching specimen plant in your landscape. Great for shaded gardens in South and Central Florida or well-protected areas farther north, Australian tree fern truly shines. For a tropical oasis look, plant by a pool or small pond where the interesting canopy can be reflected beautifully in the water.
