Donald Trump ’s defense team and New York prosecutors told starkly different stories in closing arguments at his hush-money trial: one about a lying former loyalist out to twist legal recordkeeping into revenge, the other about a scheme to interfere with the 2016 presidential election.

With enormous stakes for the former and possibly future president, jurors will decide if the machinations around a payment in 2016 by Trump’s then-lawyer, Michael Cohen, to porn star Stormy Daniels add up to a criminal conspiracy in violation of campaign finance and tax laws.

To prove Trump’s guilt, prosecutors had to prove there were false business records, that they intended to cover up a conspiracy to promote or prevent the election of a candidate to public office,
