Punica 'Eversweet' Pomegranate is a deciduous (evergreen in tropical regions) multi-stemmed shrub or small tree grown for its ornamental features as well as its delicious fruits. The plant's arching branches of glossy green leaves are accompanied by large, showy orange-red flowers midsummer to early fall (July to September in California). Orange-sized fruits (pomegranates) follow, ripening from late summer through fall. Like most pomegranates, 'Eversweet' has a red outer skin; but unlike most pomegranates, its fleshy interior is clear with non-staining juice sacs (arils) that are virtually seedless and, as the name suggests, very sweet, even when immature. Pomegranates are high in vitamins C and K, loaded with antioxidants, and rich in dietary nitrates. Punica 'Eversweet' Pomegranate makes an excellent accent or specimen and can also be trained as an espalier or grown as a container plant. In the garden, 'Eversweet' grows quickly, reaching 8 to 12 feet tall at full maturity, but it can be pruned to maintain almost any desired size and shape. In a container, the plant will be much smaller but will still flower and set full-sized fruits. Extremely easy to grow, pomegranate is naturally adapted to regions with cool winters and long, hot, dry summers. It performs well in coastal or inland climates, growing best in a sunny location with organically rich, dry to medium moist, well-draining soil. However, the plant thrives in a wide range of soils and tolerates drought once established. But it does benefit from a nitrogen-based fertilizer application in spring and an annual application of compost or well-rotted manure. The tree is self-fertile and will bear fruit without any pollen from other varieties, but it does require 150 chill hours. This pomegranate tree will ship at the appropriate planting time based on your growing zone. This pomegranate tree does not ship in December or January. Plant height is 18-36" when shipped.
