Leading Lady Monarda, also known as Bee Balm, is part of the Monarda genus and stands out for its compact size, early blooming period and resistance to common problems like powdery mildew. The Leading Lady series includes several colors and is specifically bred to be more compact and to flower earlier than other Monarda varieties. Size: Leading Lady Monarda varieties are dwarf in stature, typically reaching about 10-14 in. tall and spreading 18-24 in. This compact size makes them suitable for the front of borders, small gardens, or containers. Foliage: The leaves are bright green, lance-shaped and slightly serrated at the edges, emitting a pleasant fragrance when crushed. The foliage can also serve as a natural deterrent to pests. Flowers: The flowers are vibrant and showy, appearing in shades of pink, purple, red and more, depending on the specific variety. Each flower head is a cluster of tubular flowers that resemble a fireworks display, attracting bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. Blooming Period: Leading Lady Monarda blooms earlier than many other Monarda varieties, often starting in late spring or early summer and continuing through mid-summer. Deadheading spent flowers can encourage a second bloom in late summer or early fall.
