The Russian Pomegranate trees make a great choice for southern planters looking for a fruit tree that can withstand the region's heat and humidity. It is also good for northern planters, since it flowers later it avoids late season freezes. Best known for the antioxidant-rich fruit it produces, the pomegranate shrub is widely grown throughout the Mediterranean region. Its tubular blooms begin to appear in late May and early June, providing nice spring color, while the fruit ripens from September to October. The fruit is a bit unusual, as the only edible parts are the jewel-like arils and seeds found inside. It can either be left to grow naturally as a shrub or pruned and grown as a small tree but prefers well drained soil. It requires moderate watering and is hardy in Zones 7-10. It requires between 100-200 chill hours to flower and fruit with the possibility of fruit beginning between 2-5 years. At maturity, it can reach a height between 8-10 feet and equal spread. The Russian pomegranate is hardy in USDA Zones 7-10. It is shipped in a #1 pot with an average height between 12-18 inches.
